The Controversy Over Genetic Engineering - 1460 Words

Humans desire perfection in everything, even if that means crossing the boundaries of natural life. A new looming untested technology, human genetic modification, raises questions as to whether it will advance human society or cause inconsistencies in the human genome. Essentially, this controversy will effect everyone since it is still early but it is an upcoming topic. Genetic engineering specifically effecting the next generations. Commentators on this debate argue that it will promote the positives of scientific advancements, but others dispute that this raises strong ethical concerns. Genetic engineering has the possibility to cure diseases while furthering modern medicine, but humans would abuse the process by creating a competitive†¦show more content†¦While Green believes in this hopeful technology, Hayes sees no benefits in this new form of engineering. Hayes believes humans are not very ethical and would likely fight for who can make the most prestigious human. Thi s technology would likely divide class rank of people even more Hayes discusses. Hayes debates that Green’s argument is invalid because Green never discussed clearly which type of genetic technology would be used such as humans would all try to make some super genetically modified human. Hayes continues on by describing that genetic modification might help us reach these goals to further our society but, with these goals we want to reach we will cross lines of basic human rights what is truly natural to this world. In agreement with Hayes, Steven Pinker, a well-known, award winning cognitive scientist and the author of â€Å"My Genome, My Self† thoroughly that our genes have a big influence on who we are but do not solely define us. Humans’ genes are a complex system and do not simply stay stationary from generation to generation but are forever changing from the evolutionary progression. From the natural selection process, Pinker discovers that it is not just o ur genes but our environment and humans’ behaviors which makes humans human. Pinker deems that we can not be designed from one inserted individual gene into our large genome but it is many factors that go into creating the complex
